Marijuana and its effect on appetite

It is known that a condition caused by intoxication from marijuana often causes a feeling of hunger. This is also proved by various studies of the effects of marijuana on humans. According to the results of these studies, it became known that one of the manifestations of intoxication is the acceleration of metabolism and, as a result, increased appetite. Metabolic disorders are one of the most common causes of marijuana use in countries where it is legal for medical use.

In Italy, a study was conducted that was to identify a mechanism that causes appetite in people who use marijuana. The so-called endocannabinoids - substances similar in their composition to cannabinoids contained in hemp, correspond to the feeling of hunger in humans, but these substances are produced by the human body, and do not come from outside. Endocannabinoids activate the brain receptors, which then give a signal to the body, and the person begins to feel hungry. The study suggests that leptin, a hormone that commands the body to lose weight, is also affected by endocannabinoids. With this study, scientists tried to explain the opposite effect from smoking marijuana, namely the fact that it is small, but for statistics a significant number of marijuana users, on the contrary, lose appetite.

However, it is premature to rejoice in the other miraculous ability of marijuana in the fight against overweight, since it is unlikely that cannabinoid-based drugs will be used for this purpose in the future. Cannabinoids also have a great influence on the perception of pain, mood and memory. Their suitability for the treatment of obesity, which is often the cause of a person's mental state, is problematic.
Additional information on this issue can be found in the studies conducted at the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of California in 2006. Now in the United States, medical marijuana is most often used to treat digestive disorders and to suppress side effects from other drugs that have caused loss of appetite in patients.

The study showed that long-term use of marijuana has a negative impact on the body mass index (the ratio of weight and height of the person, which should ideally have a certain value), and the effect on cardiovascular disease is still unknown. Nevertheless, studies have shown that cannabis use is associated with other harmful factors - tobacco smoking, high-calorie food and alcohol consumption.

The final verdict, unfortunately, sounds like this: the consumption of marijuana in the fight against obesity does not give positive results. A person who adheres to a diet experiences enough suffering when controlling his appetite, so any other attacks on his will, in the form of stimulating taste buds and artificial hunger, can be counterproductive. There is no mention of overeating due to the effects of marijuana exposure in studies.
